Project Portfolios
Olympic Associates
Value Management and Training
The Challenge
Complete a Value Engineering/Analysis workshop that would strive to meet the needs and program
issues for the Palmer Alaska School District and bring the project back into the available
dollars allocated for the new Houston High School.
The Process
Bluewater, working with Olympic Associates and other consultants,
completed a three-day Value Engineering workshop to identify potential changes to the
project that might provide better value. Bluewater's VE team
member was tasked with the evaluation of the civil elements of this challenging project.
A job site visit was conducted in which extensive photographs were taken and interviews of
the Architect and school officials were completed. One of the key requirements was
to maintain the alignment of the building in relation to the sun, recognizing it's ability to
provide light and ancillary heating in this Northern climate.
The Results
Under the current design, the new high school was to be constructed partially below
ground on a hillside site. Based on the conclusions of the workshop,
Bluewater completed a cost and design review with the
recommendation that the school be relocated approximately
one hundred feet away from the hillside, which decreased the construction costs
by $750,000, yet still provided the same service and quality.
