The Portico Group
Cost Estimating and Project Scheduling
The Challenge
Bluewater was invited to help The Portico Group, a leading Seattle
design firm, to prepare a cost estimate and overall project schedule that would
incorporate the needs and requirements of the National Park Service
and the public at Mount Rainier's Camp Muir during the renovation project.
The facility is used as a base camp for expeditions on the mountain from
May through September by Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI), a climbing franchise
within the park, and private climbers and hikers. Essential services required by
these groups must be maintained continuously during the renovation of the Camp Muir site.
The Process
Working with The Portico Group, RMI and the National Park Service,
Bluewater developed multiple cost estimates and project
schedules to provide the stakeholders with information that would help them
to make informed decisions and select the most effective solution. These decisions
required considering not only the cost impacts but also impacts to
the users and the Park.
The Results
On the basis of the cost and schedule analysis, the National Park Service was able
to prioritize work within the renovation project and divide it into a multi-year
program with minimum cost impact, yet still meet the needs of the public.
